After the inquisition of al-Hajjaj, opposition went underground. For the next 150 years, secret societies circulated secret teachings to their followers. Eventually they grew in number until they were large enough to take control of agricultural areas in what is eastern Saudi Arabia today. But did these secret societies support or deny Mecca as the true Holy City of Islam?
