انتشار تصاویری از موشک هوا به هوای R-73E در کنار هواپیمای آموزشی یاک-130 ایران، بار دیگر توجهات را به تحولات نیروی هوایی ایران جلب کرده. این موشک از زمان ورود به خدمت در نیروی هوایی شوروی در سال 1984، همواره یکی از تأثیرگذارترین سلاح‌های هوایی بوده. قابلیت‌های منحصر به فرد موشک، به حدی بود که پس از فروپاشی دیوار برلین و اتحاد دو آلمان، کشف توانایی‌های واقعی آن شگفتی کارشناسان غربی را در پی داشت
